How many of us use street fashion images we see on socials to assist with our own style getting dressed in the morning? Inspire you to reach for that forgotten ripped skinny pair of denims we saw Kate Bosworth wear at Coachella this week, or to have the instinct that it’s ok to wear your everyday runners to a night out on the town with your maxi skirt?? Last week I watched the most fantastic documentary on the most inspiring man, Mr Bill Cunningham. Bill revolutionised street fashion photography in his native city of New York, into the global phenomenon it has become today; paving the way for bloggers and social media commentators to chronicle an era’s ever-changing fashion scene on what people wore — stylishly, flamboyantly or just plain sensibly !

Street style snaps have become just as, or even more important than the fashion shows that create the looks we love. Bill really had more interest in seeing how trends were worn on the streets.

Bill was an endearing human being, one of simple pleasures, never a style icon himself. He got about town on a pushbike til the day he died at 87 years of age, forever chasing stylish people to contextualise what was happening at that moment. The New York Times published his work for almost 40 years. Nothing escaped his knack for detail, and he inevitably created a time capsule of the changing dress habits across the decades- from a more formal approach to fashion, to something far more individual.
