NEW ADDITIONS WITH SHINY BLING TO MAKE YOUR OUTFIT SING!!!
Posted on
I love a little shine in my fashion!!
I collect sparkly staples for my wardrobe like a bower bird padding it’s nest- be it metallic fabrics such as brocade, lame, lurex, sequins, chains or whatever I can hustle up on a day out fashion scouting. Ever since my childhood I’ve felt there’s nothing better than decorating your casual wear with a little bling to make your outfit sing! (like my rhyme??:))
Ever wondered how & when shiny things other than jewellery came onto the fashion menu? There are so many twists & turns from so many cultures that have a story about this refreshing discovery!!
For example, a fun fact is when King Tut's tomb was discovered in 1922, gold sequin like disks were found sewn onto the Egyptian royal's garments. Sewing precious metals and coins onto clothing wasn't just prepping for the hereafter. In fact, the origins of the word “sequin” have always referenced wealth!
Imagine wearing literally gold and silver! The real thing have been used in apparel since ancient times. Originally referred to as ‘Cloth of Gold,’ metallic fabrics were woven on Byzantine looms during the 7th and 8th centuries, and were reserved for only the most affluent members of the Byzantine Empire. By the 9th century, much of the production of metallic textiles was taking place in Venice, Cyprus, and Sicily. Haute couture designers will still pull out the expensive stuff today on occasion for their looks!
Of course today anyone can feel stately in a little bling! I mean, I owned a bedazzler back in the day & had many an 1980’s sloppy joe with way to many rivets & jewels!!
