Last Friday night I attended a fantastic seminar for Mercedes Fashion Week, the ‘Fashionably Conscious’ seminar where representatives from Australia’s biggest fashion labels Bassike (pictured), Tigerlily & Elk spoke about the changes their brands have made to become much more transparent with their environmental fashion footprint, and shared their knowledge of what they are doing to further minimise their environmental impact.
Fashion & its environmental impact is a complicated issue, and one that has come to the forefront of many a fashion lovers mind of late. It’s obvious that there is a LONG LONG way to go with how we deal with the crisis due to the world’s love affair with fast fashion! Some really shocking facts were spilled by our panel, here’s just a few that will horrify:
Every ten minutes 6000 tones of fashion waste is dumped into the environment globally, that is just insane!!
73% of all fashion made doesn’t even make it to the consumers, again this goes to landfill.
When you return an item to one of your loved fast fashion sites like ASOS or the ICONIC, (which believe it or not is half of all orders are returned) the returns are deemed unsellable and that all goes to landfill as well, they don’t even put it back into their sale stock!
So how do we narrow down how we all handle the global epidemic?? How can we all play a part to start to reverse the way we all think about fashion? The problem starts with demand. We need to re-educate our fashionable selves on how we look at fashion, starting with sustainability within our own wardrobes. We need to comb through our own practices first, and we need to dictate to the industry on what we want to wear and how we want to shop.
