Oooh, fashion
-David Bowie, Fashion, 1980
A few weeks back I was in Melbourne for a music event and took the opportunity to explore the David Bowie Exhibition at ACME. It was a fantastic journey through Bowie’s career in music, and the visual tie ins with fashion that created the mystique behind Bowie’ genius.
His influence on music, fashion , visual & virtual culture has transcended time and just keeps going!
He was the true pioneer of collaborating with designers to create the overall image that his music projected. Moments such as Alexander McQueen in 1997 designing the striking Union Jack coat used for the ‘Earthling’ album cover , Natasha Korniloff for his iconic 1980s ‘Ashes’ video, or Kansai Yamamoto who created many of Ziggy’s stage outfits before Bowie killed off that character.
Since Bowie, fashion has never been more tied to contemporary music, whether it be the annual ‘Fashion Rocks’ charity series founded in 2005, which has included everyone from Bowie himself with Arcade Fire, Elton John, Queen B, Jay Z, Alicia Keys, Jo Lo….just to name a couple Madonna, our Kylie, Katey Perry, Taylor Swift and so many more collaborate with designers to create their persona for tours and videos.
Tonight is Aussie music’s night of nights with the ARIA Awards happening - probably as you are reading this. I’ll be there with my partner and friends to celebrate our lands biggest names. Australia’s talented men and women of music are world class with their own style, and it’s always a great people watching event!
What would you wear to the ARIAs? Well here’s a few suggestions from aceyacey.com.au for your next music event, so put on your red shoes and dance the blues!!
